More Raves For FlyAKite OSX

I've been using the FlyAKite OSX software for a couple days, and I'm loving it more and more. It has all sorts of new features that no other software bundle was able to give me. It's like I'm in a dream where my cheap(er) Dell actually morphs into an Apple Powerbook. Freakin' awesome!
Some of the additional features are:
1.) The boot screen. This is the neatest part, I think. The boot screen actually looks just like a Mac bootup screen. It has the Apple logo dead center with the little running dots underneath it. Nice effect since I have long been bored with WindowsXP's boot screen.
2.) The Welcome screen. Also a nice effect. It has the users on my system listed in the middle and at the top it has a big fat MAC OSX written, so no one has any problem wondering what my OS is supposed to be. Also the sounds when I log in are different from Window's usual.
3.) The UberIcon effects. This makes my icons in my dock "bounce" when I double-click on them. The icons on my desktop also have a neat effect added to them. They "ripple" (thanks, Jack) when you roll over them.
4.) The WinRoll effects. When I minimize a window I am working in, it actually rolls down to the dock with the cool little effects I only thought were possible on Macs. I have been looking everywhere for scripts that could make my windows do that, but have yet to find an independent one. In fact, I don't think I have found one yet, so I was shocked when my windows acted this way.
Thank you, Chris Kite, for this totally cool software. You've made my computing life so much more interesting.

Windows To MacOSX

I installed FlyAKiteOSX onto my WindowsXP and I like it alot. Now everything in my Windows acts like MacOSX. Really neat if you ask me. I had tried another variation called Panther, but it wasn't completely free and I still had to do a lot of tweeking with it, so when the demo version expired, I didn't pay for it.
With Panther I still had to go find a dock and docklets for the clock and everything, because they didn't come bundled in with the rest of the software. Also, I had the hardest time finding Mac icons that would work with my Windows, because of the file extension differences. Didn't seem very nifty to me.
This FlyAKiteOSX has everything I want all bundled together in one convenient-to-install package. It changed my registry and .dll files, and I didn't have to take the time to do it myself. Also, it changed my StartUp screen, replaced the word "Start" on my taskbar with the Apple logo, and fixed the settings on my IE and Firefox so they both looked like Mac.
All in all, I have absolutely no complaints about this software. But, beware that after you click download on the first page, another page pops up with other freeware advertized. Just wait for the page to redirect or you'll end up with a ton of spyware and adware installed on your machine.

Ubuntu On Dell Inspiron 6000

As mentioned in my previous post, I encountered a few problems when I installed Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog on my Inspiron notebook. The first one occurred when it tried to auto-configure my network. I guess my internal wireless card is not DHCP, so it didn't recognize it and I had to manually configure my network by entering my I.P. address. Then, it took almost 25 minutes to "Configure APT," which didn't take but 40 seconds on my Dimension desktop.
The real problems occurred after installation was complete. I booted it and it ran normally until the GUI was supposed to run, and that's when my screen went dark. I got back to my TTY1 terminal "Ubuntu Login" and couldn't type anything. I think maybe there aren't drivers in Ubuntu for my graphics or keyboard. I'm not completely certain about that, but it seems the most logical answer at this point.
*One thing I learned during installation-- don't delete your swap partition or you can't install Ubuntu. BIG oops... thank God for fdisk on liveCDs!

Linux on My Systems

I've been a Linux user for quite some time now. I got into it one day when I was cruising Google and found a website with screenshots and downloads. I downloaded a small ISO image file (Sam Linux) and burned it to a CD and ordered a copy of Knoppix. When I booted from the Sam Linux, I was instantly hooked. I liked the GUI and I could do so much more with it than I could with Windows. I did have problems... since I was a new Linux user and was accustomed to Windows, the terminal commands took some getting used to. Also, my Knoppix didn't have the driver for my sound card, which really bummed me out as I was told it had some cool boot-up and shut down sounds.
I didn't do a Linux install until I recieved my Ubuntu Hoary CDs. It installed and ran great on my Dell Dimension 4550 desktop system, but for some odd reason when I installed it on my Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook, the display went black and I don't think the keyboard worked. I googled "Ubuntu on Inspiron 6000" and returned a bunch of articles that all reported Ubuntu working great on the laptops it was installed on. I don't know if maybe its a glitch with the software I'm using or if I did something wrong when I was installing. The one thing I do know is that when it boots my screen goes dark.
Maybe tomorrow I'll delete the Ubuntu partition and download and install Debian or Gentoo (I like the screenshots for both of those, and Ubuntu is Debian-based so it would be easy for me to get accustomed to.) I don't thing I want to migrate to Redhat OS's as I haven't heard many good comments on them.
I'd get completely away from Windows if it weren't for the fact that i don't have a Linux compatible printer and webcam, among other things. I really don't like much about Windows now that I've had the opportunity to use something different, and I find that the simplicity of Windows bores me to death. I can only do so much with it, but I can customize Linux to death if I felt like it. There really is no limit on the things you can do with it, and the best part is that it's usually completely FREE!
